Now you are probably wondering why I titled this post the 3 W's. To tell you the truth it just struck me the other day. Kind of like those OH YAH moments, something comes to mind and you can't let it go. That is where this idea came from.
I have started another Bethany winter challenge. I have really enjoyed the challenges and am grateful we have started a new this year. It give me a chance to be accountable to tohers, and really think about the choices I make through out the day. And that is where this idea sponded from.
There are three W's I need to think about each day. One is water, two is what I eat, and third is workout. All three of this are important and an essential part to controling, not neccessryly lossing, weight. Let me explain.
The first W- water. Water is an important part of who we are. The average adult body is between 50-70% water. The brain alone is 75% water! That is important to know. Just think how much faster I would think if I drank my 64oz. of water a day. Now I hope you know that is an average. Some authoritise believe we should drink half our weight, so if you are 140lbs. you would drink 70 oz. per day. Still other authorities still stick to the same rule of thumb 8X8 a day, 8 glasses of 8 oz. of water per day!
The second W is what I eat. This is just as important as water. Growing up my mom used to tell me you are what you eat. For me that never stuck till I was/am adult. As a kid I did not get it. But now I do. If I eat junk food or high calorie food all the time I am going to gain weight and feel heavy. I eat healthy food, and keep my calorie intake under control I will feel better, more in control of my life. Now there are many ways I have tried to do this, but there is one way that has helped me the most.
I love food and food loves me! I have tried counting calories, doing the no carb diet since I have a allergy to gluten, and trying to the whole 30 diet also. None of them really worked nor stuck. It felt like what I am calling them a diet. Then it hit me the other day watching a health show on TV. Did you know the average plate size has increased by 20% since the early 1950s!? I did not realize that. Now that may not seem like a lot, but it is. If you take a surface and increase it by 20% and fill it. You have alot more food on that surface. So for me it is size that counts. I have started cutting my meals in half. Do I still struggle? Of course! But now when I place a plate for me on the table I use my 9" plate instead of the 12" plate that we have. I use the small bowls or more shallow bowls instead of the deeper ones that my hubby likes. Size does count!
The last W is workout. This has been the biggest struggle for me. I don't like to exercise. If I walk or job outside I get itchy legs. If I go to the gym I feel uncomfortable by the people. The whining can go on for a LONG LONG time. But I know that working my body is keeping not only me physically fit it is keeping me mentally fit. It is an important component to my brain health. I know that some experts feel that the increase oxygen and other factors keeps our brains function well. But I don't do exertion well.
I turned to yoga. My kids have taken classes and I have kind of dabbled in it. I decided to find something to inspire me. I started a 30 yoga challenge. Surprisingly enough it has helped a lot. I feel calmer, and more at ease. I realized by practicing yoga it helps me to think about my body and how it functions. Am I going to loose a tun of weight? Probably not. But I don't think that is what this about.
I am finally coming to the conclusion with my 3 Ws this is not about the number on the scale. This journey is how I feel. Do I feel healthy? Am I active? Am I rested and at peace? Or am I agitated and angry all the time? Do I fell sluggish? But most important do I feel like I can do my job well?
This is a journey for me. And I am ready to start my journey a new with a new year.
